Rituals in anthropology essays Rituals are a significant part of our society and the way we live our lives. They are important because they give us a sense of security and loyalty to a group. Rituals are also a main aspect of religion, and studying the differences among cultures helps us gain a greater understanding of how rituals influence our lives. We perform rituals to demonstrate our values and beliefs, to pray, and many times to reinforce unity within a group. Certain rituals become so fixed in our everyday routine, we dont realize we are performing them. Anthropologists believe that ritual has existed since the very beginning of our time. Some believe that it is ritual that has kept us here so long, and without this regular practice, we would not have the security or solidarity needed to survive. Invariably, there are things in life that we cannot control, no matter how hard we try. Rituals are a way of increasing our command while creating a comfort zone. The articles that are going to be discussed deal wi th ritual in ancient societies, the way they relate to modern rituals and the presence of rituals in a cultural activity such as baseball. The first article Rituals of Death: Capital Punishment and Human Sacrifice is a unique comparison of ancient Aztec rituals of human sacrifice in Mexico and capital punishment in America. Human sacrifice was a part of the offerings for the gods, whose hearts and blood were considered the supreme gift. Similarly, capital punishment can be seen has a modern day form of human sacrifice. In this article Elizabeth Purdum compares these two rituals with an analysis of each according to the sequential order in which the rituals are performed. She begins by giving a brief explanation of who is put to death. The Aztecs sacrificed an estimated total of 20,000 to 250,000 people annually. In my opinion this is very important and should always view both sides of the story Many types of these ethnic groupââ¬â¢s actions could make it easy and lead to a decline of ethnic relations on campus. For instance, letââ¬â¢s say if ethnic students did everything together as a whole and only participated in ethnic student activities, then it would clearly segregate the campus. Unfortunately no a days, this world for the most part is over the whole ââ¬Å"whites and blacks racial dividednessâ⬠and no one should be seeking to head back on that path. Now, campus cafeterias could show a sign of being like that again with several different ethnic groups scattered around. If each ethnic group had its individual organization, I fell that the members could get extremely complacent and start to sense a feeling of superiority. This eventually could lead to conflict with other ethnic groups throughout the campus. It is very also important to look at how other students will view these ethnic groups. Other students may not like these groups, which once again could cause conflict. Another scenario, students may feel threatened by these groups, therefore making them not want to attend class or socialize around campus. There could also be a chance that these ethnic groups could try to bring down a disliked professor or even another group. Universities un-affiliated with a religion may deal with groups with strong religious beliefs and could try to implement their religion into the university. Even schools that are represented by a religion are in danger of an ethnic group with other strong religious beliefs. With all of these problems with ethnic groups, could quickly multiply as they also act as networking groups to get more students who share the same background and beliefs to attend the school. Even graduates could carry this on to their future employers, although experts claim that no network group has ever set out to bring a company down, companies are the next things for college students and bring the risk of having their employees become far too separate from each other. The whole idea of diversity in a company is to make the work place and as uniformly supportive to all cultural backgrounds. By allowing these groups to form, the companies are moving further away from supposedly a fair and diverse population of workers. The segregation of ethnic groups from the rest of the student body largely contributes to a decline of ethnic relations on campus. If I were to see the other side of this and disagree, I would believe that if students of the same ethnic background only dined and participated in ethnic student activities, then it would not contribute to a decline of ethnic relations on campus. Instead, it would have students who tend to stay surrounded by people of the same ethnic background could feel more free, comfortable and accepted; thus bringing improvements leading to higher grades in the classroom and a more humble attitude towards life. Also being placed within a group will most likely encourage students to go out socialize, take part in campus activities, and enjoy campus life. This will lead to them interacting with people from different backgrounds. These ethnic groups can also play a vital role in campus activity by hosting fundraisers, parties, or sporting events. Another benefit to being part of an ethnic group is that many voices are better than one. So by having your voice heard out there will help put an end to any discrimination that was happening and will strengthen the campusââ¬â¢ ethnic relations. Future students looking to attend the school in the years to come may visit the campus and see a group of people who share the same ethnicity or interest as themselves and allure them to come to that university. These groups working as a form of networking could be a massive tool in attracting a diverse student body while at the same time strengthening ethnic relationships. Having been asked to support the statement or disagree, I would have to say that I agree with the statement. In order to be diverse, the student body as a whole it needs to be integrated at all times. It is one thing to live and be part of a group with people who share the same background; however, they should also be with people of other ethnicities and backgrounds. One group only interacting with themselves and not acknowledging other groups forms poor ethnic relations habits. I also feel that most ethnic groups will express a religion that will stir up controversy with other groups for one reason or another. By using the groups as a way to persuade new students to attend the school, the groups will quickly grow and possibly cause even more conflict to the university. Ethnic groups will bring nothing more than poor ethnic relations habits to campus and future graduates workplaces causing only a decline in ethnic relations.

A Life of Greatness Of all the characters that I' ve " met" through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald " Moonlight" Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I, too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life. Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I' ll be entering the adult world, a world in which I' m not yet prepared to lead. I' m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need, my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham, a man who has shown me that characters like Dr. Graham and Mr. Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers. Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life.

Poverty and Lifeboat Ethics Essay
A famous Chinese proverb goes: ââ¬Å"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he will eat for the rest of his days.â⬠Although this wise advice was given thousands of years ago, nowadays looks like no powerful or rich government on Earth understands that sentence. Garrent Hardin, author of ââ¬Å"Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poorâ⬠show us an honest perspective on how the rich countries in the world, by donating food and money, instead of helping poor countries get out of their misery, cause more hunger and strife. In addition, he tells us that overpopulation in poor countries should be controlled soon, or the current situation will turn ugly very fast. Although Hardinââ¬â¢s evidence is almost indisputable, his position is not. I understand why the author believes that helping poor people is a bad idea but he isnââ¬â¢t looking at many others sides of the situation. At the beginning, my reaction was the opposite. I was totally convinced by Hardinââ¬â¢s theory. I desperately sought a place within a ââ¬Å"lifeboat!â⬠But after discussing the essay in class, and hearing myself repeat Hardinââ¬â¢s words that express his indifference about poor people, and also rethinking his thesis in which poor people donââ¬â¢t have a chance for a better life, I changed my position. I canââ¬â¢t support those ideas because in my own point of view, they are false. It is just not true. Some countries and some societies already made a change. Some countries like South Korea, Singapore and China have broken the poverty cycle. We shouldnââ¬â¢t be so negative and we must remember that even the poorest people on the planet have imagin ation, ideas, beliefs and an imperative necessity to change their own universe. However, I think that the answer is within Hardinââ¬â¢s thesis too. Poor people donââ¬â¢t need food and clothes only in cases of emergency. Instead, they need a few rich governments interested in giving them tools and ways to improve their economies, to develop their ideas and to use their creative minds. Without that little help all life in this planet will disappear. So, helping the poor is also a way of helping everyone else, even rich people. And here Hardinââ¬â¢s thoughts are necessary: ââ¬Å"Without a true world government, controlled reproduction and the use of available resources, the sharing ethic of the spaceship is impossible.â⬠(Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor. Pg. 310.) If the poorest destroy their natural resources, the consequences will be for everyone, regardless of how much each possesses. In conclusion, I think Hardin is correct when he asks about the future on Earth, if we take statistics and analyze their results for the year 2050. However, his position against helping poor people and trying to eliminate them from the face of the Earth is wrong. I believe in a true world, where rich countries use their development technology and their healthy, well-nourished minds to decrease the percentage of poverty in the world, and where everyone wins the right to live in this, our planet Earth.

That is why; we had come up to present ââ¬Å"Cardava Turonâ⬠as our original product for the YEntrepMan Business Plan.ââ¬Å"Cardava Turonâ⬠came from the word ââ¬Å"Cardava Bananaâ⬠which means ââ¬Å"Saba Bananaâ⬠in the Philippines.Cardava Turon was made possible because of the booming ââ¬Å "turonâ⬠business. Weââ¬â¢ve thought that selling ââ¬Å"turonâ⬠could be a better idea to produce a product that is known and saleable. Ten to twenty square meters would be the ideal stall/kiosk size.6.5 EquipmentsWe will need five computer sets initially to be used at the main office. Minimal office supplies will do for the company is still starting. Five telephone lines are also needed to be used for communicating to all staffs; retailers; and suppliers. The equipment to be used for the kiosk would be cash register for recording sales transactions, deep fryer to be u sed for cooking all Cardava Turon products, freezer for all perishable raw ingredients. Also we will provide food warmer to store all the cooked products and to be used for display purposes, small cabinets are to be used for non-perishable goods. Preparation table is also considered necessary when making Cardava Turon products including also all the necessary cooking tools and gadgets to make the operation efficiently.6.6 Work FlowAll personnel who are working at the main office will be working eight hours weekdays depending on the volume of their work. Office hours would be from 8:00am until 5:00pm, but flexible working hours will do also. Sundays will be their day-off and through Saturdays the office hours would only be half-day which is from 8:00am to 12:00noon. As to the stall/kiosk the operations would be from Mondays through Sundays, operations will start at 7:00am until 9:00pm though business hours will just start at 8:00am untilà 8:00pm.There will be three shifts in a day: the opener from 7:00am-3:00pm, the mid-shift from 10:00am-7:00pm and the closer from 1:00pm-9:00pm. Initially stalls will be manned by only three people who include a stall supervisor and two sales associate. The stall supervisor will be in charge of the scheduling. He can decide on his own on who would be assigned in the shifts, preferably the mid-shift will be the stall sup. So that he/she can monitor well the operations of their stall. As our business grows we intend to hire additional sales associate to make our operations even more efficient.6.7 Production RisksPreventive measures are to be implemented to lessen or decrease the possibility of being hurt and injured in the production of all Cardava Turon products. We will make sure that all employees especially the sales associate are properly trained with regard on the production or cooking of Cardava Turon. First aid kit will be provided to all Cardava Turon kiosks. Stall Supervisor will be responsible for checking all the ne cessary machines and equipments if they are working properly and effectively. They are used to refer to things that people want to talk about: people, objects, concepts, processes and all kind of entities. 2. Basic Noun Phrases Structurally speaking, in the first place, basic noun phrases consist of pronouns, numerals or nouns with articles (indefinite, definite or zero) or nouns with other closed-system items that occur before the noun head including pre-determiners (pre-det), determiners (det. ) and post-determiners (post-det. ). Demonstrative pronouns fall in two groups. One is ââ¬Å"nearâ⬠reference with ââ¬Ëthisââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëtheseââ¬â¢; and the other ââ¬Å"distantâ⬠reference with ââ¬Ëthatââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëthoseââ¬â¢. This is my friend. Interrogative pronouns: ââ¬Ëwhoââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhomââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢, etc. Who did you go with? Universal pronouns: ââ¬Ëeachââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëallââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëeveryââ¬â¢ series: ââ¬Ëeveryoneââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëeverythingââ¬â¢, etc. Everyone has his own ambitions. Partitive pronouns, parallel to the universal ones, consist of assertive pronouns including the ââ¬Ësomeââ¬â¢ group (ââ¬Ësomeââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësomeoneââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësomethingââ¬â¢, etc. ; non-assertive with the ââ¬Ëanyââ¬â¢ series (ââ¬Ëanyââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëanyoneââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëanythingââ¬â¢, etc. ); and negative with the ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢ series (ââ¬Ënoneââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëno-oneââ¬â ¢, ââ¬Ënothingââ¬â¢, etc. ) Nobody has come yet. Apart from pronouns, numerals including cardinal numbers (ââ¬Ëoneââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtwoââ¬â¢, etc. ) and ordinal numbers (ââ¬Ëfirstââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësecondââ¬â¢, etc. ) can form basic noun phrases, as in: Two is better than one. 2. 2 Basic Noun Phrases with Determiners Not only can basic noun phrases consist of pronouns or numerals, but they can also comprise a head noun with determiners or determiners modified by pre-determiners and/or post-determiners. The head noun of a noun phrase is the central element and decisive factor in performing the syntactic functions of the whole noun phrase. It can be singular count noun such as ââ¬Ëbookââ¬â¢, plural noun ââ¬Ëbooksââ¬â¢ or mass noun like ââ¬Ëinkââ¬â¢. Determiners can be indefinite article ââ¬Ëaââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëanââ¬â¢; definite article ââ¬Ëtheââ¬â¢; or zero article as in the noun phrase ââ¬Ëbooksââ¬â¢. The use of articles is not the only possibility for determining nouns, but we can use such words as ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthisââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësomeââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëeveryââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëeachââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëeitherââ¬â¢ before the head noun like ââ¬Ëbookââ¬â¢. These words, also called determiners, forming a set of closed-system, are mutually exclusive with each other, i. e. there cannot be more than one occurring before the head. Both ââ¬Ëa the bookââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëa some bookââ¬â¢ are ungrammatical. Determiners are in a ââ¬Å"choice relationâ⬠, that is they occur one instead of another. In this respect, they are unlike ââ¬Ëallââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëmanyââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëniceââ¬â¢, which are in a ââ¬Å"chain relationâ⬠, occurring one after another as in: All the many nice pictures are collected. The articles are central to the class of determiners in that they have no function independent of the noun they precede. Other determiners like ââ¬Ësomeââ¬â¢ are also independent pronouns: A: I want the money. B: Here is the. (ungrammatical) B: Here is some. These items, referred to as closed-system pre-modified, form three classes (pre-determiners, ordinals and quantifiers) which have been set up on the basis of the positions that they can have in relation to determiners and to each other. The first class of the closed-system pre-modifiers, pre-determiners, is unique in occurring before the determiners. They are: (1) ââ¬Ëallââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëbothââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhalfââ¬â¢; (2) the multipliers ââ¬Ëdoubleââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtwiceââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthree timesââ¬â¢, etc. and fractions ââ¬Ëone-thirdââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëtwo-fifthsââ¬â¢, etc. and (3) ââ¬Ësuchââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢ (exclamative). It may be count or mass noun which dictates concord and (for the most part) other kinds of congruence with the rest of the sentence outside the noun phrase. This is exemplified in: The only girl in this class is hardworking. All of the beautiful girls in my class are kind. Also, when the genitive is as pre-modification, the head nouns can be omitted: We met at the dentistââ¬â¢s last week. 3. 2 Pre-modification The second component of a complex noun phrase is pre-modification, also called pre-modifiers, including modifiers that stand before the head noun. Pre-modifiers can be closed-system and/or open-class items. Closed-system pre-modifiers are discussed in the structure of the basic noun phrases above. These items are optional in the complex noun phrases. These adjectives can be both attribute and complement. In addition, pre-modifying adjectives can be intensifying ones which have a heightening effect on the noun they modify or the reverse, a lowering effect, e. g. : ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ (a real hero), ââ¬Ëdefiniteââ¬â¢ (a definite loss), ââ¬Ëcompleteââ¬â¢ (a complete fool) and ââ¬Ëcloseââ¬â¢ (a close friend). These adjectives are generally attributive only. Restrictive adjectives, another class of pre-modifying adjectives, restrict the reference of the noun exclusively, particularly or chiefly, e. g. : ââ¬Ëcertainââ¬â¢ (a certain person), ââ¬Ëexactââ¬â¢ (the exact answer), ââ¬Ëonlyââ¬â¢ (the only occasion) and ââ¬Ëveryââ¬â¢ (the very man). Like intensifying adjectives, the restrictive ones are attributive only. However, there are a number of adjectives which cannot pre-modify the head, but can be predicative such as: ââ¬Ëfaintââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëillââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwellââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëableââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëafraidââ¬â¢, etc. Not only are the head nouns pre-modified but pre-modifying adjectives can also be, especially when they are the first items after the determiner. In this case, it can be pre-modified in the same way as it can be in the predicative position. This is illustrated by: |à |His really quite unbelievably happy |family |à | |à |à |Head |à | With indefinite determiners, some intensifiers such as ââ¬Ësoââ¬â¢ are differently used. ââ¬ËSoââ¬â¢ is replaced by ââ¬Ësuchââ¬â¢, which precedes the determiner or else ââ¬Ësoââ¬â¢ plus adjective would be placed before the determiner, e. g. : Such a beautiful girl So beautiful a girl Apart from pre-modifying adjectives, the head nouns of the complex noun phrases can be pre-modified by particles, either present or past, e. g. : an approaching man (present participle), the badly injured dog (past participle), etc. The head noun can also be pre-modified by genitives, e. g. these qualified doctorsââ¬â¢ salaries,these doctorsââ¬â¢ high salaries, etc. group genitives as in the teacher of Englishââ¬â¢s salary, an hour and a halfââ¬â¢s discussion, etc. ; or other nouns as in the city council, a love story, etc. Another class of pre-modifiers is the type of denomical adjective often meaning ââ¬Å"consisting ofâ⬠, ââ¬Å"involvingâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"relating toâ⬠. These items must come next before the head and can be preceded by a wide range of pre-modifying items, e. g. : à the pleasant social life, a city political problem, etc. Finally there are various classes of pre-modification, both closed-system and open-class. Therefore, when the complex noun phrases consist of different classes of pre-modifiers, they may be placed in a relevant order. Apart from ââ¬Ëwithââ¬â¢, there is a wide range of prepositions that can be used, e. g. : à the road to London, the house beyond the church, a child ofà five, etc. , including the complex prepositions, e. g. house on the top of the hill, action in case of emergency, etc. and those having participle forms as in problems concerning the environment. The commonest preposition in the noun phrase post-modification â⠬Ëofââ¬â¢ has a close correspondence to ââ¬Ëhaveââ¬â¢ sentences: The ship has a funnel. the funnel of the ship The table has four legs. the four legs of the table However, some are relatable to ââ¬Ëbeââ¬â¢ sentences: London is a city. the city of London The news was the teamââ¬â¢s victory the news of the teamââ¬â¢s victory Also, the ââ¬Ëofââ¬â¢ phrase can be used to express the subject or object relation: The bus arrived the arrival of the bus Someone imprisoned the murderer the imprisonment of the murderer In the example (2), the post-modifier is a relative or finite clause which can be restrictive or non-restrictive. There are a number of relative clauses beginning with relative pronouns: ââ¬Ëwhoââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhomââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhoseââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthatââ¬â¢ (personal); ââ¬Ëwhichââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthatââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢ (non-personal); ââ¬Ëwhenââ¬â¢, a preposition plus ââ¬Ëwhichââ¬â¢ (time); ââ¬Ëwhereââ¬â¢, a preposition plus ââ¬Ëwhichââ¬â¢ (place); and ââ¬Ëwhyââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëfor whichââ¬â¢ (reason). The adjective phrases can usually be regarded as a reduced relative clause. Complex indefinite pronouns ending in ââ¬âbody, -one, -thing, and ââ¬âwhere can be modified only post-positively, e. g. : Anyone (who is) intelligent can do it. The men (who were) present were his supporters. In the example (5), the phrase explicitly encodes the information that ââ¬Å"Carmen is an operaâ⬠. For this reason, ââ¬Ë Carmenââ¬â¢ is traditionally said to be in apposition to ââ¬Ëthe operaââ¬â¢. Another minor type of post-modification illustrated in the example (6) is adverbial modification. Similarly, in the following examples, the adverbial phrases post-modify the head noun: the way ahead, the direction back, the hall downstairs, etc. Unlike pre-modifiers, their no grammatical limit to the number of post-modifiers occurring in a noun phrase, considerations of style and comprehensibility will normally keep them to one or two. Where we have more than one, the relative order tends to depend on the related properties of length and class, with shorter modifiers preceding longer ones, prepositional phrases preceding clauses: |à |A man |from Britain |who I was talking about last night |à | |à |à |prepositional phrase |relative clause | | 4 Conclusion In conclusion, noun phrases, either basic or complex are potentially very complicated. Most simply, basic noun phrases consist of just one overt element, pronouns of different types or numerals. Basic noun phrases, more complicatedly, comprise pre-determiners, determiners, post-determiners and the head nouns, the order of which is fixed. Complex noun phrases, as their names imply, are the most difficult of all. They consist of pre-modification, head noun and post-modification. Pre-modification includes closed-system and open-class items which are in the given order. The John Newbery Medal and Current and Past WInners In the United States, the John Newbery Medal is the most prestigious childrens book award that an author can receive. The Newbery Medal is an annual childrenââ¬â¢s book award administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC of the American Library Association (ALA). According to the ALSC section of the ALA Web site, To be selected as the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, the book must have been published the previous year in English by an American publisher in the United States. The John Newbery Medal, commonly referred to as the Newbery, has been awarded every year since 1922. It is named for John Newbery, an eighteenth-century British bookseller. To be eligible for a Newbery, either winning the Newbery Medal or having your book designated a Newbery Honor Book, the following terms must also be met: The author(s) must be either citizens or residents of the United States. Fiction, non-fiction, and poetry are all eligible, but reprints and compilations are not. The book must be written for children, with children defined as ââ¬Å"persons of ages up to and including fourteen.â⬠The book must be an original work. A book that was originally published in another country is not eligible. Furthermore, the organization used the Conversation Share to determine the position of the organization in the social media as far as competition is concerned. This is done through measuring the amount of conversation about organizationââ¬â¢s products in comparison with the number of conversations about the riva lsââ¬â¢ products.
